Why Delivery Day Matters
Most portable toilet problems trace back to delivery day. The unit landed in the wrong spot. The driver could not access the back yard because of a low gate. The placement was on a slope that made the door swing the wrong way. The luxury trailer arrived without a generator and the venue had no power. The construction site was locked and there was no one with a key.
None of those problems are hard to avoid — but all of them happen, every week, on jobs across San Diego County. This guide walks through what we need to know before delivery, what happens on delivery day, and what you can do in advance to make sure the unit lands exactly where you want it.
Delivery Timing in San Diego County
Same-day delivery: Most weekday orders placed before 10 a.m. ship the same day. Coverage extends across all of San Diego County — coastal, urban, North County, East County, the South Bay, and back-country zones like Alpine and Ramona.
Next-day delivery: Afternoon and evening orders typically deliver the next morning. We confirm the delivery window when you book.
Scheduled delivery: For events, weddings, and planned projects, book your delivery 48-72 hours in advance to lock in a tight window. For luxury trailers and large multi-unit deliveries, 1-2 weeks of lead time is ideal.
Emergency delivery: 24/7 emergency response with 2-4 hour rolling time across the county. See our Emergency Portable Toilet Rentals page for the full process.
Site Access Requirements
Our delivery trucks are roughly the size of a medium box truck. We need:
- Clear vehicle access: 10 feet of width along the path to the placement spot. Tighter clearances may work for shorter distances — call us if you are unsure.
- Overhead clearance: 13 feet 6 inches minimum. Common obstacles in San Diego County include low garage door frames, mature canopy trees, parking-structure entrances, and certain residential gates.
- Turning room: A space where the truck can pull in, set the unit down, and pull back out without backing for more than 30-50 feet.
- Surface that supports a loaded truck: Asphalt, concrete, packed dirt, and most gravel surfaces are fine. Avoid asking the truck to drive across newly laid sod, soft sand, or freshly poured driveways.
If your site has unusual access, call us during booking and we will discuss options. Sometimes we deploy a smaller truck, walk a unit in on a dolly, or stage it at the closest accessible point.
Picking the Right Placement Spot
The placement spot is the single thing under your control that has the biggest impact on how well your rental works. The right spot is:
- Level. No more than a 5% slope in any direction. Otherwise the door swings unpredictably, the tank does not pump cleanly, and the unit may rock when used.
- Accessible. Close enough to the work or event area that people actually walk to it. A unit at the back of the lot may as well not exist.
- Out of direct afternoon sun when possible. Shade reduces interior heat, slows polyethylene degradation, and keeps deodorizer working longer in San Diego summer.
- Away from sprinkler heads. A sprinkler that hits the unit four mornings a week will accelerate hardware corrosion and leave standing water around the door.
- Away from kitchen and dining areas at events — both for the obvious reasons and because food vendors are required to maintain set distances from sanitation facilities.
- Door-swing clearance: 3 feet in front of the door for standard units, 5 feet for ADA units.
- Privacy backdrop: Whenever possible, place units against a fence, wall, or vegetation backdrop so the door does not open into a public sightline.
Special Surface Considerations
Concrete and asphalt: Ideal. Stable, level, and no impact on the surface from the unit.
Packed dirt and gravel: Fine for most rentals. For long-term rentals on dirt, expect minor settling over the first 1-2 weeks; we can re-level on a service visit.
Sand and soft soil: Add plywood pads (we can supply). Without pads the unit will sink, the door will jam, and pumping becomes difficult.
Grass: Short, healthy grass is fine for rentals up to about two weeks. Longer rentals on grass will kill the grass underneath — plan accordingly.
Pavers: Fine, but the unit's weight (typically 200-250 lbs empty, 700+ lbs full) can press individual pavers down over time. Use plywood under the skid if you are concerned.
Slopes: Avoid anything over a 5% grade. If your site is sloped, we can usually find a level corner or use leveling blocks under the skid.
Luxury Trailer Delivery Specifics
Luxury restroom trailers have additional delivery requirements compared to standard units. The trailer needs a level pad (we level with stabilizing jacks, but the starting surface matters), a 110V or 30A power connection (typically a dedicated household outlet or a generator), and a freshwater connection (a standard garden hose works, or we fill the onboard freshwater tank).
For venues without on-site power, we supply a quiet inverter generator at no extra charge. For venues without on-site water, we fill the trailer's onboard freshwater tank, which holds enough for most weddings and events.
Trailer footprint depends on the size. A 2-stall trailer is roughly 12 feet long; a 4-stall is 16-20 feet; a 6- or 8-stall is 24-30 feet. The trailer needs a clear approach path of the trailer length plus 20-30 feet for turning. We walk every venue with you in advance if there are any access questions.
Day-of-Delivery Checklist
- Confirm the placement spot is clear of vehicles, dumpsters, equipment, and obstacles.
- Have someone on site with placement authority — or send us a placement diagram in advance.
- Make sure any gates or locks are unlocked, or arrange to meet the driver.
- If you are in a gated community, send us the gate code during booking.
- If you are on a job site with a construction-management plan, confirm the placement spot complies.
- For events, confirm the venue contact is reachable during the delivery window.
- For long-term rentals, talk to the driver about service-day access — Mondays for weekly service, etc.
What to Expect From the Driver
Our drivers arrive in marked Vesper trucks. They will identify themselves, confirm the placement spot with the on-site contact, position the unit on level ground, chock the skid to prevent rocking, confirm the unit is stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer, leave a delivery ticket, and pull out without lingering. The whole delivery typically takes 10-15 minutes for a single unit.
For multi-unit deliveries, ADA units, and luxury trailers, the placement and setup time runs longer — 30-60 minutes for a trailer with leveling, power hookup, and water connection.
After Delivery
Once the unit is on site, you will receive an emailed delivery confirmation with photos of the placement. Your servicing schedule (if applicable) starts immediately. You can reach us at (619) 308-0313 if anything needs to change.
If you want to relocate the unit on the same site, that is usually free for long-term customers and quoted at a flat rate for short-term rentals. Pickup at the end of your rental is included in your rental rate — just call when you are ready.
